Recap of Training #2

Recap of Training #2

So what did we do for the 2nd BJJ training?

1) Firstly we did a revision of the ARMBAR
But this time, we added in some variations

Over time, as you practise and hone your BJJ skills
You may find that BJJ is like a chess-game
It's not all about using brute strength
But finding the correct way to break your opponent's defence
Get into the desired and advantageous position
Before controlling and submitting him

So for the ARMBAR we did
It was executed while in a full-mount position
And you first try to execute an AMERICANA on your opponent

Btw AMERICANA is also known as the
" FIGURE-4 ARMLOCK " or " KEYLOCK "

Wrist control and getting to execute the AMERICANA

As your opponent tries to defend the AMERICANA
You go in for the ARMBAR

Remember to try out both sides!

Even the ladies can do it too!

2) We learn a new technique called the " TRIANGLE CHOKE "
There are a couple of variations of the " TRIANGLE CHOKE "
For the training, we did the most commonly executed one
Which is when you are in full-guard position

Begin in full-guard position

Next pull your opponent head towards you by grabbing the neck

Convert to high-guard position
Ensure that you are isolating one of his arm

Next, extend your hip and "bridge-up"
While remembering to grab your opponent's hand
(the one you wanna isolate)

After which, pull his arm across your body
His arm should be in contact with his neck

And at the same time
Shift your body sideways
Get the angle that allows his arm to be positioned against his neck
While you also can manage to shift your leg perpendicular against his head
So that you can prepare to hook your other leg over your own leg
(remember you can use your other hand to aid you!)

Once you hook your own leg over each other
Press the leg down
Using the calf against the ankle
(in this photo case, the right leg)

And there you go
You have succesfully forrmed the "TRIANGLE"
To make your opponent submit
Not only do you have to just press your legs down against his head
You also have to squeeze your hips together
And in the meantime, ensure his own arm is choking himself at the neck area

This is how the " TRIANGLE CHOKE " works

Your legs and hips and body forming the "TRIANGLE"
And then his own arm is choking himself
Cutting off the air supply

So after practising the " TRIANGLE CHOKE "
We also learn how to defend against it
Which is by posturing up
(the typical escape move)

But similar to the ARMBAR
We learn how to variate our move
And transit to the ARMBAR
(yes ARMBAR from TRIANGLE CHOKE!)

As your opponent tries to posture up
Quickly switch your leg that is pressing the calf against the ankle
And hook it over his head
Pushing his head to the side
And executing the ARMBAR on the isolated hand

There you go!
Something new each session!

Remember to come down for training on
THURSDAY, 27th Oct 2011
6pm-830pm @ Nanyang House Seminar Room 1
It's on the 2nd floor btw
See you guys there!

First BJJ class of sem 2!

Its nice to see some familiar faces. Ok back to business. Here are the things that we have learnt during the class.

1. Mount- It is the most important technique because it provides the most advantageous position. Try to get it if you can! That is the reason why it is taught over and over again for the classes.

2. Side control- Have to have control over the upper body, which will lead to transition.

3. Escape side M

4. Escape open guard- escape from a bad position.

5. Escape from mount- Important too, since the person will try to mount you all the time!!! This technique stresses on the leverage, where you have to find a pivot point and then you can flip, sweep to reverse. Like swinging a door open. You can also grip on his love handle like this guy here =) (Around the 2:20 mark)

Thats all for today! Next week there will be more exciting skills to learn!

The Practice on 6 October 2010

Hello everyone! Last practice had been quite informative and hope that you guys learned a lot from it. We had learned:

1) Rear Naked Choke

To apply this attack, start in Rear Mount, controlling your opponent with the over-under grip. It's important that your bottom hand grabs your top wrist, and not the other way around.

Then grip his opposite (right) shoulder with your top (left) hand. This step is called the “tiger claw,” because your fingers are in a claw shape as they grip the back of his right shoulder.

Now pull your bottom (right) arm out from under his armpit and clasp your hands together, palm-to-palm. Note how your right forearm is pointing downwards. This makes for a very strong position because your arm is braced against his back. Your opponent is still blocking the choke with his hands, which is why we go to Step number four.

With your left hand, regrip the shoulder (just like in step two). At the same time, shoot your right hand forward to knock his right hand off of my forearm, limiting his ability to block your choke. This is a quick motion, almost like a palm strike to his wrist. You won't want to push his hand slowly, or leave your hand dangling out there for him to grab.

Now return to the palm-to-palm grip from step three. Now the noose around his neck is much tighter, and his primary defense – his right hand – has been removed from your forearm. Note how your elbow is positioned directly in front of his nose. Ideally your forearm comes UNDER his jaw and not across his face or chin.

Shoot your right hand deep behind his neck and lock it into place using pressure from your own head. Your left hand is on your right bicep. Squeeze down, in and up in a hooking motion under his jaw. You also stretch him out by extending your legs and arching your back to make the choke even more powerful. Carefully monitor your training partner in case he passes out before he gets a chance to tap out. Following these six steps will turbo charge your Rear Naked Choke attack when you're training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and/or submission wrestling.

2) Break Dance

This is an exercise for you to train your agility. From the position of doing a push-up , try to go to his side in the fastest possible way and while stretching the leg closest to his body out. You can add some variations like stretching your hand out or do it with a smile. =)

3) Side Mount

Side control (often also called side mount or sometimes cross mount) is a dominant ground grappling position where the top combatant is lying perpendicularly over the face-up bottom combatant in such a way that the legs are free and he or she exerts considerable control over the combatant on the bottom. The top combatant is referred to as having side control, and is in a stable position, with the other combatant pinned beneath him or her. From there the top combatant can proceed with elbows, knees, various armlocks, or transition into a mounted position. It is high priority for the bottom combatant to sweep the top combatant or otherwise escape the position, for instance by entangling the opponent's free legs and trying to obtain the half guard or guard.

4) Grappling Session

This is the time where you can apply all of the skills that you have learned! Learning is by doing, so enjoy!

Till next week!
