Recap of Training #3

Hi all

Here is the recap for the 3rd training that recently passed

Basically we did some techniques on "Spider Guard"
We also learn a new submission move "Omoplata"
This move is also simply known as the "Shoulder Lock"
We also learn how to break guard from a standing position
rather than the "traditional" way of "Seated Guard Pass"

Let's start with the "Spider Guard"

First of all
There are 3 levels in the human body in BJJ
The 1st level would be the knee area
The 2nd level would be the hips
And the 3rd level would be the biceps
"Spider guard" works on all the 3 levels

As you all can see above
It's holding on to your opponent's wrists
Then extending one of your leg straight at the biceps
The other leg would be bend
So shifting your hands and legs simutaneously

Example
If your right leg is straightened, as you move to the other side
Your right leg should now be bend while your left leg is straightened
This is with accordance to you pulling your opponent's right wrist
towards you when you bend your right leg

Yup I know it sounds kinda complicated
But ya........you gotta just practice!

Hilmi correcting our mistakes

Next
Building on the "Spider Guard"
We move on to the submission move "Omoplata"

Check out the start of the submission move
This is the "Spider Guard" position

Take note of the legs and hands position
And your opponent's too

From here
Drop your right leg
That means take it away from the biceps
Notice your left leg is still pressing on your opponent's biceps
And your left hand is holding onto his wrist too

Dropping your right leg and then go underneath his armpit

Hook it behind his shoulder
This is called the "Lasso"

The back view of how the "Lasso" looks like
From here
You can actually just use your foot to control him tremendously
If he moves back up, just pull him back
If he comes close, just push him away
The leg is one scary tool to control your opponent from here

From there
Use your left leg as a standing tool
Imagine stepping on a trampoline
Use it to rock your hips up and do a hip raise
Then kick out your right leg (the Lasso leg)
And straighten it
All the while the hands are always holding onto your opponent's wrist

Next is the difficult part
Imagine you are playing soccer
And you are gonna execute a "Flying Overhead Kick"
or commonly known as the "Bicycle Kick"

As you execute the "Bicycle Kick"
Let go of your left hand
Right hand still holding onto your opponent's hand

This is the completed version

As your opponent's shoulder is locked
(where the name of the submission comes from)
Quickly go over to your opponent's waist
He might try to posture up or slip away to the side from here
But he can only go one way as his shoulder is locked
Thus holding onto your opponent's waist is one way of dictating control

You can grab his/her pants or gi pants for extra leverage

Then straighten out your legs
Both your legs should be straighten out
All the while keeping his shoulder in between

From here
You wanna fold your knees to the sides
And you wanna do it while shifting your entire weight to one side
Which is away from the locked shoulder
The ultimate aim is to flatten him out on the ground
so he can not go anywhere

Grab onto your opponent's shoulder
And lean directly diagonal across
Imagine just heaving yourself on top of him
All the while with the shoulder locked in
And imagine his arms in a 90 degrees L position
To submit him
Just imagine twisting a chicken wing apart
to get the drumlet and the wing part separately
It's the same concept as the "Kimura"

You can use your other hand to twist his locked shoulder
for additional effect

***REMEMBER
Exercise this move with caution
If you suddenly throw all your weight on top on your opponent
Snapping his shoulder is no doubt a major possibility
Doing martial arts here is all about self-defence and technique
We are not all to inculcate a fighting culture here

The next move we learn was the "Standing Guard Pass"

With your opponent getting you in "Guard" position
He wants to grab hold on your neck and biceps/triceps
The correct thing is to posture up first
Then grab one of his wrist and press onto his abdomen

Post one of your leg by the side (not shown in picture)
Then stand right up
Remember to lean back to get maximum stability

From here
Fish out your hand and break free from his grip

Same as the "Seated Guard Pass"
Lean to one side first
Then press your whole body weight on one side of his thigh
Remember to straighten out your arm that is pressing onto
his thigh

From there, just rock to one side and back to the extended arm
Press down hard on his thigh
Promise you you can break out of the "Guard"!

Next up
To counter this "Standing Guard Pass"

Your opponent jolly well want to break your "Guard"
with the "Standing Guard Pass"

Grab onto his legs with an "Inside Hook"
Amateur opponents would leave their legs shoulder-wide apart
That is exposing themselves to you grabbing onto their legs

As you grab onto their legs
Open up your guard immediately
They cant break away as they are standing up
And you are grabbing onto their legs

As your guard is open
Just kick out and flatten them

Quickly transit to the "Full Mount" after that
Now that's how you counter your opponent
And gaining a transition move too!

Now here is a video for demonstration purpose!
Enjoy and practice!

Training #1 for the 2nd Half of Sem 2 in 11/12

Hi all

Welcome back to NTU BJJ Training!
This is the first training starting in the 2nd half of this semester in 11/12

For this training
We focus more on wrestling stuff like takedowns
Which was taught by our in-house wrestler Ben
An exchange student from the States!

As the 1st half of this semester was more on learning about submission
This 2nd half of BJJ training would be more on getting to the positions
rather than just learning how to submit your opponents

As usual
Starting up with warm-ups!

We did this kinda special warm-up in which 2 of us were paired up
And we had to do sit-ups
Followed by maneuvering 360 degrees around your friend
Like a monkey climbing around a tree
It was tough work!
Serious core muscles were definitely needed for both parties

After which
We had this "game" in which the objective was to score 5 points against
your opponent by touching his knee

You earn 2 points for 2 hands on his knee
1 point for one hand
So all of us had to actually practise shooting at the opponent at the
correct timings while the opponent has to practise his sprawling techniques

The game in progress

The first to get to 5 points means your opponent has to be punished by doing push-ups!

So after the warm-ups, we got down to learning our wrestling takedowns!

The first takedown was called the "Spill"!

Keyword: "Heel, toe, knee"

Points to take note

- The head should be at the outside instead of the inside
(in which you might be subjected to a guillotine choke straightaway)
- Along with the knee that is being straightened
As illustrated in the photo above

This is the point you wanna get

Your hands should be cupped around your opponent's knees
Then suck the knees towards you
This weaken the knees and throw your opponent's centre of gravity off

After which
Using your head against your opponent's torso and lifting him up
in the direction that you want to throw him to
(which is the direction opposite where your head is)

Of course, do practise safe break-falling!

Note that this is quite similar to a "Double Leg Takedown"

From there
Immediately go to the side-mount position!

Hilmi correcting some of us

Next was the "Ankle Pick"

Same as the "Spill"
But the difference is that you are holding onto your opponent's head and neck
"Heel, toe, knee"
After doing that, immediately change the level of your opponent
by pulling his head and neck down towards the ground to throw
him off balance totally

With 1 mind on the knee that is on the ground
Go for the opposite ankle of your opponent
All the while keeping your hand's on your opponent's head and neck

After which
Just lift your opponent's ankle up and throw him to the side
Remember that you SHOULD stand up
So that you can fully utilise your body weight against bigger opponent
And of course, make your job easier!

Note that this is quite similar to a "Single Leg Takedown"

Once you get him to the side
Immediately throw his leg to one side so you can achieve the side-mount!

So after learning and practising the takedown techniques
We move on to BJJ techniques

The first one was "escaping from sprawl"

If you shoot and try to takedown your opponent but failed
as he immediately goes into a sprawl
And he has you grabbed around the waist

(as illustrated in the photo above)

Hold onto one of your opponent's hand and then shoot out your leg to one side

Immediately lean onto him with your whole body weight while
still holding onto his hand

*From here you can actually go for a "Kimura"

But the point is positioning remember?
So from there quickly get to your opponent's back!

Getting to your opponent's back!

From there of course you can execute your "Rear Naked Choke"

The next move to escape from sprawl if your opponent is way too strong
And when you try to shoot your leg to one side but he just tightly cling onto you

So lets say you try to shoot your leg to the right side as illustrated in the
previous photo
But your opponent block it as he is using his brute strength to hang onto you
Well, you can just your momentum to swing the other side to the left
And then quickly flip and lay onto him
(as shown in the photo above)

Remember to hold onto his arm!

As he would be taken aback by your sudden change in direction
He would lost his balance
And you laying onto him would make him harder to hold onto you
From there, you just have to break his grip and transit to a side-mount!

Other than escaping from sprawl
We also learn how to move to a "North-South" position

So starting from side-mount
Do a arm-drag to get your opponent's arm to the side
Then get into a "Scuffle" position
In which you are trapping his arm that was being arm-dragged

From the "Scuffle" position
Quickly get into a "North-South" position
All the while trapping your opponent's arm
Remember that as you move from the scuffle position to the North-South
You have to place your arm at your opponent's waist to prevent
him from stopping you to transit to the new position
It's a kinda feeling by your body's senses thing!

This was something new
So not every one of us could get it right even after some time
But it was great to learn some new positions!

After the training
We end off with a 5 minutes roll!
This time with our friends as side-line instructors
Teaching and trying to advise how to get to new positions,
escaping, how to submit, how to remember to breath and not gas out etc

Photos below are of us coaching and rolling!

It was intense as everyone was putting in their best!
But a great and tiring session for this week!
Thanks a lot to Ben for teaching us how to do the wrestling takedowns
so that we could incorporate them into our BJJ trainings!

Do check back for further details on when our next training would be
Yes we know everyone is busy with quizzes and mid-terms
But you guys still can come down for training once a week!
Do bring your friends along to try this out!
See you all next week!
:)
