Recap of The Last Training For Sem #1 2011/12

Recap of The Last Training For Sem #1 2011/12

We had the last training for this first semester of the academic year 2011/12
Basically this session was more like a sharing session
Whereby in which we all practised our moves and techniques
And just learn some tips and tricks from the more experienced guys

The highlight of this last training session was
the epic " Royal Rumble " tournament!

For fans of the World Wresting Entertainment aka WWE
You all will be very familiar with this annual event " Royal Rumble "
Whereby there's this famous line of
"every single man or woman for himself/herself!"

Basically
The objective of this tournament
Or just simply to win this tournment
You have to submit every other opponent and remain
"The Last Man/Woman Standing!"

Our contestants gathering on the mat

All checking each other out first
You could sense that actually everyone was quite serious about it
Even though it was supposed to be a light-hearted affair!

The "ring bell" sound and the event got underway!

Immediately
Action broke out in all parts of the mat
You could see double-team and even triple-team!
(someone was hiding in one corner at the top of the picture....)

Basically everyone all wanted to get the bigger-sized guys out first!

Some alliances were formed and......broken
(due to opportunism and all)

So it was left to this "2 versus 1" situation
Whereby the 2 were aiming our more senior blue-belt guy

And so this was the winning formula - DOUBLE ARMBAR!
(this scene was re-enacted for photo-taking sake!)

And after our "Royal Rumble" tournament
Hansel our President presented the respective lady and guy winner
with some token of appreciation

Everyone was all smiles after the tournament
No one bear grudges
Neither were egos bruised
All were good and friendly just like before the tournament!

And right after that
We had some pizza and drinks to celebrate the end of training for
the first semester of this academic year
It's not just work and training at NTU BJJ here
We also know when to have some good fun!

Our NTU BJJ club tee is ready for sales now!

And this is the front of our club tee
Which cost only $12 bucks!
The front have our NTU BJJ club logo
Plus the Chinese characters “ 南大巴西柔术 ”

The logo on the front of the shirt

The back of the tee
With the 2 huge Chinese characters “ 柔术 ”
Awesome design by Vicky, our Financial Controller!
Great work there!

And to end off this first semester of training
Here is our group photo for the training!

We know everybody is busy with quizzes and projects and all
That's why some of you guys may not be able to come down even
though you have expressed interest in trying out
But hey, you still need to exercise and work out right?
Ultimately you want to be in good health and condition for your final lap
And exercising in the form of practicing BJJ is a good way to do it!
Not only are you learning a new craft, you also get to exercise
Plus increasing your body flexibility at the same time!
And it's just 2+ hours per week!
We're sure you can spare this time!

So do stay tune to this blog
Or add NTU BJJ as a friend on Facebook
And get updates from there!
If you have any questions, you can email ntubjj@gmail.com
Remember to study hard and work hard for the final exams!
And most importantly, carry on to come down for our BJJ training
once the new semester begin!

Cheers from NTU BJJ!

Recap of Training #3

Recap of Training #3

Here's the update on the 3rd training!

For this training
We learn techniques in gaining advantageous position during rolling

1) First up
We learn this technique known as " Scissor Sweep "

It starts off when you are in the guard position
You grab your opponent's head
Pull it down towards you
While isolating or controlling his arm
(the one that you wanna flip him over to)

Then once you are in this position
Open up your guard
Turn onto your hip
One leg on the bottom floor
One leg out
And then prepare to put in this leg in between his body

*In this case
We are trying to flip him over to our LEFT HAND side
(Note that it is different from the 2 pictures above)

You quickly put in your leg
And use your knee to press onto your opponent's belly
(Not on the chest)
In the meantime, also note that you have to pull your opponent's arm
across your chest
Your other leg is hooking onto his thigh region
Or forming some sort of grip which can assist you in the flipping motion
which is about to happen once you get in this position

Next pull the arm
Knee and other leg use as pivot to flip him over
In one fluid motion

Once you flip him over
You can get into the mount position
And finish your opponent off

2) Next technique we learn was another variation of the " Armbar "
(you will be surprised at how many types of armbar that can be applied!)

For this variation of the " Armbar "
We will be doing it from the guard position
Same thing as the theory of all kinds of " Armbar "
You start off by isolating one arm that you wanna execute your submission on

Use your outer arm
(the arm further away from your opponent's isolated arm)
To secure and grip tightly onto his wrist
Position his hand at the top of your shoulders
And your inner arm to grab his triceps

Next
Move your outer arm across over to his opposite shoulder
While on the way up
Use your outer arm to push his face away from you
Making him face the direction away from you

Now once you hold this position
Open up your guard
And get ready to use both of your legs to grip onto him

Shift your leg
(in this case the right leg)
Up to his middle portion of the body
This is the part whereby it's fleshy and you can grip onto him

Lastly
Shift your other leg
(in this case the left leg)
And press onto his face which was facing away from you
While shifting both your arms to lock onto your armbar
Remember to ensure his thumb is facing towards the sky
" The Good Hand " or aka " Thumbs Up " sign
This is how you do your " Armbar " from the guard position
Things to note:
Your opponent may try to stack onto you while you are doing this move
In MMA, if your opponent is strong, he may lift your whole body up and slam you down
So ensure that you quickly straighten out his isolated arm
Then do the "Bridge Up" or "Hip Up" to make him submit!

3) We learn a series of COUNTER-MOVES
All the counter-moves we learn were when the opponent is
standing above you while you are on the ground
And he may trying to get into a full-mount position
Or you may want to defend by going into a guard position

a) The first move is fondly called the " Donkey Kick "

This is a move whereby you kick out with a large force
Strong enough to knock your opponent down onto the ground

*Note that you should use your hands to grab onto both his legs
And assist you to flip him over and knock him over with the force from your "Donkey Kick"

b) The 2nd move is something of a " Cart Wheel "

When your opponent anticipate that you may knock him down with a "Donkey Kick"
Judging from the way you may grab his ankles
He may buckle down and twist his knees inwards to block your kick
So at this time
Grab onto his hands
Legs shift from the "Donkey Kick" position
And onto his hips
Then just lift him up in the air and use the momentum to "Cart Wheel" him over

*Note
Do take note that this is quite a dangerous move
A huge amount of space is needed
And break fall has to be done
So practice with precaution and do it slowly

c) The last move is a variation of " Scissor Toss "

It's used when your opponent knows you may try a "Donkey Kick"
Or you may even "Cart Wheel" him if his hands are stacked onto you
So he may prefer to keep his hands closer to himself
Somewhere at your belly area
His legs are also buckled and tightened

At this point
You can just grab his hands by the wrist

Cross them up
And then lower your legs towards his knee area
You then squeeze both your legs together
Making him buckled his knees even more inwards
So much so that his body balance is lost

At this point
You are basically in a kind of total control over him
Because he has defended too much

So just cross him up with your legs
Then use your hands to assist you in flipping him over

Tada!
You can proceed to side-control from here

Lastly
We ended off a session with a fight between Donovan and Teng Hon
With our in-house referee

That's it for this session

Remember on Wednesday, 2nd of November 2011
It is the last training
Same time from 6-8pm
At Nanyang House Seminar Room 1

Cheers!

Recap of Training #2

Recap of Training #2

So what did we do for the 2nd BJJ training?

1) Firstly we did a revision of the ARMBAR
But this time, we added in some variations

Over time, as you practise and hone your BJJ skills
You may find that BJJ is like a chess-game
It's not all about using brute strength
But finding the correct way to break your opponent's defence
Get into the desired and advantageous position
Before controlling and submitting him

So for the ARMBAR we did
It was executed while in a full-mount position
And you first try to execute an AMERICANA on your opponent

Btw AMERICANA is also known as the
" FIGURE-4 ARMLOCK " or " KEYLOCK "

Wrist control and getting to execute the AMERICANA

As your opponent tries to defend the AMERICANA
You go in for the ARMBAR

Remember to try out both sides!

Even the ladies can do it too!

2) We learn a new technique called the " TRIANGLE CHOKE "
There are a couple of variations of the " TRIANGLE CHOKE "
For the training, we did the most commonly executed one
Which is when you are in full-guard position

Begin in full-guard position

Next pull your opponent head towards you by grabbing the neck

Convert to high-guard position
Ensure that you are isolating one of his arm

Next, extend your hip and "bridge-up"
While remembering to grab your opponent's hand
(the one you wanna isolate)

After which, pull his arm across your body
His arm should be in contact with his neck

And at the same time
Shift your body sideways
Get the angle that allows his arm to be positioned against his neck
While you also can manage to shift your leg perpendicular against his head
So that you can prepare to hook your other leg over your own leg
(remember you can use your other hand to aid you!)

Once you hook your own leg over each other
Press the leg down
Using the calf against the ankle
(in this photo case, the right leg)

And there you go
You have succesfully forrmed the "TRIANGLE"
To make your opponent submit
Not only do you have to just press your legs down against his head
You also have to squeeze your hips together
And in the meantime, ensure his own arm is choking himself at the neck area

This is how the " TRIANGLE CHOKE " works

Your legs and hips and body forming the "TRIANGLE"
And then his own arm is choking himself
Cutting off the air supply

So after practising the " TRIANGLE CHOKE "
We also learn how to defend against it
Which is by posturing up
(the typical escape move)

But similar to the ARMBAR
We learn how to variate our move
And transit to the ARMBAR
(yes ARMBAR from TRIANGLE CHOKE!)

As your opponent tries to posture up
Quickly switch your leg that is pressing the calf against the ankle
And hook it over his head
Pushing his head to the side
And executing the ARMBAR on the isolated hand

There you go!
Something new each session!

Remember to come down for training on
THURSDAY, 27th Oct 2011
6pm-830pm @ Nanyang House Seminar Room 1
It's on the 2nd floor btw
See you guys there!
