Training #1 for the 2nd Half of Sem 2 in 11/12

Hi all

Welcome back to NTU BJJ Training!
This is the first training starting in the 2nd half of this semester in 11/12

For this training
We focus more on wrestling stuff like takedowns
Which was taught by our in-house wrestler Ben
An exchange student from the States!

As the 1st half of this semester was more on learning about submission
This 2nd half of BJJ training would be more on getting to the positions
rather than just learning how to submit your opponents

As usual
Starting up with warm-ups!

We did this kinda special warm-up in which 2 of us were paired up
And we had to do sit-ups
Followed by maneuvering 360 degrees around your friend
Like a monkey climbing around a tree
It was tough work!
Serious core muscles were definitely needed for both parties

After which
We had this "game" in which the objective was to score 5 points against
your opponent by touching his knee

You earn 2 points for 2 hands on his knee
1 point for one hand
So all of us had to actually practise shooting at the opponent at the
correct timings while the opponent has to practise his sprawling techniques

The game in progress

The first to get to 5 points means your opponent has to be punished by doing push-ups!

So after the warm-ups, we got down to learning our wrestling takedowns!

The first takedown was called the "Spill"!

Keyword: "Heel, toe, knee"

Points to take note

- The head should be at the outside instead of the inside
(in which you might be subjected to a guillotine choke straightaway)
- Along with the knee that is being straightened
As illustrated in the photo above

This is the point you wanna get

Your hands should be cupped around your opponent's knees
Then suck the knees towards you
This weaken the knees and throw your opponent's centre of gravity off

After which
Using your head against your opponent's torso and lifting him up
in the direction that you want to throw him to
(which is the direction opposite where your head is)

Of course, do practise safe break-falling!

Note that this is quite similar to a "Double Leg Takedown"

From there
Immediately go to the side-mount position!

Hilmi correcting some of us

Next was the "Ankle Pick"

Same as the "Spill"
But the difference is that you are holding onto your opponent's head and neck
"Heel, toe, knee"
After doing that, immediately change the level of your opponent
by pulling his head and neck down towards the ground to throw
him off balance totally

With 1 mind on the knee that is on the ground
Go for the opposite ankle of your opponent
All the while keeping your hand's on your opponent's head and neck

After which
Just lift your opponent's ankle up and throw him to the side
Remember that you SHOULD stand up
So that you can fully utilise your body weight against bigger opponent
And of course, make your job easier!

Note that this is quite similar to a "Single Leg Takedown"

Once you get him to the side
Immediately throw his leg to one side so you can achieve the side-mount!

So after learning and practising the takedown techniques
We move on to BJJ techniques

The first one was "escaping from sprawl"

If you shoot and try to takedown your opponent but failed
as he immediately goes into a sprawl
And he has you grabbed around the waist

(as illustrated in the photo above)

Hold onto one of your opponent's hand and then shoot out your leg to one side

Immediately lean onto him with your whole body weight while
still holding onto his hand

*From here you can actually go for a "Kimura"

But the point is positioning remember?
So from there quickly get to your opponent's back!

Getting to your opponent's back!

From there of course you can execute your "Rear Naked Choke"

The next move to escape from sprawl if your opponent is way too strong
And when you try to shoot your leg to one side but he just tightly cling onto you

So lets say you try to shoot your leg to the right side as illustrated in the
previous photo
But your opponent block it as he is using his brute strength to hang onto you
Well, you can just your momentum to swing the other side to the left
And then quickly flip and lay onto him
(as shown in the photo above)

Remember to hold onto his arm!

As he would be taken aback by your sudden change in direction
He would lost his balance
And you laying onto him would make him harder to hold onto you
From there, you just have to break his grip and transit to a side-mount!

Other than escaping from sprawl
We also learn how to move to a "North-South" position

So starting from side-mount
Do a arm-drag to get your opponent's arm to the side
Then get into a "Scuffle" position
In which you are trapping his arm that was being arm-dragged

From the "Scuffle" position
Quickly get into a "North-South" position
All the while trapping your opponent's arm
Remember that as you move from the scuffle position to the North-South
You have to place your arm at your opponent's waist to prevent
him from stopping you to transit to the new position
It's a kinda feeling by your body's senses thing!

This was something new
So not every one of us could get it right even after some time
But it was great to learn some new positions!

After the training
We end off with a 5 minutes roll!
This time with our friends as side-line instructors
Teaching and trying to advise how to get to new positions,
escaping, how to submit, how to remember to breath and not gas out etc

Photos below are of us coaching and rolling!

It was intense as everyone was putting in their best!
But a great and tiring session for this week!
Thanks a lot to Ben for teaching us how to do the wrestling takedowns
so that we could incorporate them into our BJJ trainings!

Do check back for further details on when our next training would be
Yes we know everyone is busy with quizzes and mid-terms
But you guys still can come down for training once a week!
Do bring your friends along to try this out!
See you all next week!
:)
